Kranspoort Birding Group

Feedback & Prospects for 2017:

In June 2014 writer of this report approached the then General Manager ( Willie Schoeman) to arrange a meeting to start a birding group.

The meeting was arranged and about 15 residents attended and was excited to start looking for the 200 species that we had in mind.  The Middelburg Bird Club was contacted and in the 2 years they have attended many of our walks and we learned a lot from them.

  • Gerhard Snyman and Hannetjie Senekal assisted with their vast knowledge of birds.
  • We have published 2 birding lists and a bird calendar for 2017.
  • On 26 November 2016 ( National Birding Day) we were 22 birders out on the estate and we found 7 new species of which the African Palm Swift was our number 200. (We are now on 202 species) More than 30 people joined our specie call and braai and enjoyed the day.
  • Our goal for 2017 is to erect a hide and we have raised R 36 000 plus already.  This hide will be for all residents to enjoy, we must still decide where it will be erected but the building will start in January 2017.
  • We know of a lot of people in Kpoort that love birding but never attend one of our walks. We are all learning and welcome new faces and it is nice to meet new people.

Happy birding 2017!
